Meccha Chameleon Japanese Star Collaboration Confirmed As Game Passes 15 Million Sales

Meccha Chameleon has confirmed its first-ever collaboration with a famous Japanese star, set to launch this week, revealed alongside news that the viral hide-and-seek game has sold more than 15 million copies. Developer lemorion_1224 announced both on the game’s Steam page over the weekend, writing “Thanks a million” and teasing that “a new collaboration with a famous Japanese star” is coming.

The developer shared no further details on who the star is, though an earlier Steam post hinted a “collaboration map” is in development, likely tied to the mystery figure. As of 5 July 2026, the crossover is confirmed for this week, with the identity still under wraps.

The Japanese Star Collaboration And Collaboration Map

The collaboration is the first the game has run since its 9 June 2026 release. lemorion_1224 confirmed it is arriving this week but withheld the star’s name, leaving fans to speculate on who the crossover partner might be. An earlier developer post pointed to a dedicated “collaboration map” in the works, suggesting the tie-in will bring a themed environment rather than cosmetics alone.

A themed map would follow a pattern the developer has already established. After hitting seven million sales, lemorion_1224 added a Japan-themed map to the game, so a purpose-built map for the Japanese star crossover fits the studio’s existing approach to milestone content.

How Many Copies Has Meccha Chameleon Sold?

Meccha Chameleon has now sold more than 15 million copies, reaching the milestone in under a month after its 9 June 2026 launch. The figure comes just nine days after the game passed 10 million sales, and continues a climb that saw it hit one million copies in four days, three million within a week, and 10 million in 16 days before reaching 15 million in only 25 days.

The game is priced at US$6, or £5.29 in the UK, well below the cost of most triple-A releases. Its Steam reception has matched the sales pace, with more than 85 per cent of over 45,300 reviewers leaving a positive rating.

How Meccha Chameleon Became A Viral Hit

Meccha Chameleon was built by a single programmer and an artist in just two months, launching with a simple interface and a low price. Its multiplayer hide-and-seek concept has players disguise themselves by painting their bodies to blend into the environment, while hunters race the clock to spot and eliminate them.

The format proved ideal for the friendslop genre, with creators and players sharing clips that spread the game across the internet. It sits alongside social co-op hits like REPO, Lethal Company, and Among Us, all sold at a fraction of triple-A prices. On the game’s absurdly short two-month development timeline, lemorion_1224 has earned roughly US$1 million per day of work.

Meccha Chameleon’s Pace Against AAA Releases

The 15 million figure outpaces several major releases that took years longer to build with far larger budgets. Resident Evil: Requiem, released in February, became the franchise’s fastest-selling title with over six million copies sold in just over a month. Forza Horizon 6 passed six million copies in 16 days, and open-world RPG Crimson Desert sold six million copies within three months of launch.
