Jennifer English Exits Tides of Annihilation, Baldur’s Gate 3 and Clair Obscur Actor Cites Health

Jennifer English has stepped away from Tides of Annihilation, the PS5 action game in which she played protagonist Gwendolyn, saying she needs to rest and properly look after her mental and physical health. The BAFTA-winning Clair Obscur and Baldur’s Gate 3 actor told developer Eclipse Glow Games in June, and a new performer is already recording the role for the game’s Gamescom demo next month.

English is not leaving the project entirely, and she helped find her own replacement.

English’s Statement

Writing in a story on her Instagram account, English called it a “difficult yet personally necessary decision” as the game moves into its next phase. “I’m really grateful to have been part of Tides of Annihilation since the game’s inception and to have worked with such a lovely team,” she wrote. “Recently, I’ve found myself needing to slow down and reassess the commitments I’ve taken on. After careful thought, I’ve realised I need to take time to rest and properly look after my mental and physical health. With that in mind, I’ve made the difficult, yet personally necessary, decision to step away from the project as it moves into its next phase.”

She also introduced the studio to the actor taking over, describing her as “a very talented” performer “who I believe is a wonderful fit for Gwen”. “Having seen her passion, talent, and care for the craft, I’m excited for players to hear her interpretation of the role and can’t wait for players to experience what she brings to Gwen,” English wrote. “Although I’ll be stepping away from the role, I’m happy to remain involved with Tides of Annihilation as an advisor, and I look forward to supporting the team and Gwen’s journey in a different capacity.”

The Studio’s Response and the New Performer

Eclipse Glow said English informed the team in June, and that while it was “saddened by her decision, we completely understood and respected Jennifer in prioritising her wellbeing. We are also deeply grateful for the care and responsibility she showed throughout this process.” The studio added that during the transition, English “remained incredibly supportive and, together with other members of our voice cast, helped us identify and connect with talented performers who could carry Gwendolyn forward while staying true to the character.”

We have some sad news to share, that Jennifer English will be stepping away from her role as the English voice of Gwendolyn, the main protagonist in Tides of Annihilation due to personal health reasons. She will continue to support the project in an advisory role.

The replacement has not been named. The studio said her “recent work in video games left a strong impression on both Jennifer and our team, not only for the performance itself, but for the remarkable care and dedication she showed in understanding the character”, and that she is currently recording Gwendolyn’s English performance for the Gamescom 2026 hands-on demo. Players will hear it for the first time in that demo in August, as well as in select official updates across the studio’s channels during the same period.

Eclipse Glow closed by thanking English for a performance that “brought depth, strength, vulnerability, and heart to the role”, adding: “We have truly enjoyed this journey together, and wish Jennifer all the very best, and most importantly, good health and happiness in whatever comes next.”

What Tides of Annihilation Is

First announced in February 2025 during a PlayStation State of Play, Tides of Annihilation comes from Chinese studio Eclipse Glow Games and fuses modern-day London with Arthurian legend, pairing Bayonetta-esque combat with an Elden Ring-influenced fantasy aesthetic set against the present-day British capital. Players take the role of Gwendolyn in search of the Holy Grail, fighting to save her sister and restore the world while commanding spectral forms of the Knights of the Round Table.

There is still no release date, though the game is confirmed for PC via Xbox, Epic and Steam, plus PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Its next public outing is Gamescom next month, which is also where the recast Gwendolyn gets her first airing.
