Call of Duty Movie Set in Modern Warfare Universe, Director Peter Berg Confirms June 30 2028 Release

Paramount’s Call of Duty film is rooted in the Modern Warfare universe, director and co-writer Peter Berg told fans during a Call of Duty in Culture panel at Fanatics Fest in New York City, reaffirming a 30 June 2028 release date. It ties the movie directly to the sub-series getting its next game in October.

The reveal was held back deliberately, and it capped the franchise’s first headline appearance at a sports convention.

The Film and Its Date

Activision announced in April that the film would arrive in summer 2028, setting the 30 June date that Berg reaffirmed on stage. The project, from Taylor Sheridan and directed by Berg, is pitched as “delivering on the hallmarks of what fans love about the iconic series, while boldly expanding the franchise to entirely new audiences.”

Activision chief marketing officer Tyler Bahl had spent the run-up to the weekend refusing to be drawn on it. “There might be a small announcement or association with the film,” he said ahead of the event. “Well, it’s a big announcement for us. I think the fans will be really excited. But I think we’re saving that for Saturday.”

Why Call of Duty Was at a Sports Convention

Fanatics Fest 2026 ran at the Javits Center in New York City across four days, welcoming 150,000 attendees for panels, events and athlete meet-and-greets spanning Formula One, FIFA and the NBA. Modern Warfare 4 was the first video game ever to take a headlining spot at the show, which Bahl argues is less strange than it sounds.

“It started with an insight: A lot of people that buy our game, they usually buy one or two games a year; us and maybe a sports game,” Bahl said. “And the overlap between us and sports is really powerful. It’s always been there. We see the players shouting us out in interviews, on podcasts. We see them talking about the communication. That when they play together, it actually helps their communication on the field. We saw that with the Chiefs. We heard that with the Knicks players.”

The other motive was getting controllers into hands. After two years of back-to-back Black Ops releases, the team wanted to market this one differently. “We were thinking about how one thing we really wanted to do this year that was different is we haven’t put the game in people’s hands before it came out,” Bahl said. “We have betas and things like that. But I think getting back to those days of going to events, going to experiences, and allowing people to play, we knew we wanted to do that.” The activation included tie-ins with Aston Martin and Polaris, celebrity grudge matches between Knicks, Yankees and WWE stars, and a live panel featuring Bahl, NBA star and Call of Duty actor Kevin Durant, Infinity Ward director Mark Grigsby and Obsession star Inde Navarrette.

Modern Warfare 4 in October

The game the film shares a universe with lands first. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, from Infinity Ward, releases on 23 October, and it is a pivotal entry for reasons beyond the story. It will not be playable on day one through Xbox Game Pass, and it is the first Call of Duty game to reach a Nintendo platform in over a decade, since Call of Duty: Ghosts on the Wii U.

Activision has promised no “BS or silly skins” this time, and recently detailed a multiplayer offering that includes the Kill Block mode launching with more than 500 map configurations. The franchise has seen lacklustre sales over the past few years, which makes the combination of a differently-marketed October game and a dated film release the clearest sign yet of how Activision plans to reset momentum.
