The Russo Brothers are back on hand as directors for the next installment of the already fantastic Marvel Cinematic franchise – Captain America: Civil War. At 146 minutes, the Cap’s third solo film boasts a gargantuan feature starring almost the entire Avenger’s team, as well as impressive newcomers, huge fight scenes and a new rivalry that sets the stakes throughout the entire film.

At first glance, Civil War seemed like an Avengers sequel we didn’t need so soon, due to the appearance of almost the entire Avenger’s squad and how each member seemed to play an intricate part in the overall storyline. That being said, The Cap’s story still takes center stage, alongside the film’s central focus on the loss of unity between a team of Earth’s fiercest protectors in the face of global adversary.

Steve Rogers (aka Captain America) and the team come under conflict when the Sokovian Accords, a treaty put forward by the United Nations following the events in Age of Ultron, is enforced and backed by Tony Stark (Iron Man) to allow government oversight when it comes to the doings of The Avengers. Stark believes unchecked power comes with a price, and expresses remorse over the countless deaths him and his team have caused trying to save the world while Rogers abhors the idea of putting their power in the hands of the Government, especially after serving in World War 2 and following terrorist organization, HYRDA’s infiltration of the government agency, SHEILD. Both Rogers and Stark bring up valid points and the rest of the team is forced to choose sides.

Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jnr bring life to the newborn rivalry between Captain America and Iron Man and it is their disagreements and opposition where Civil War is at its most engaging. #TeamCap and #TeamIronMan became trending topics on social media even before the release of Civil War and it was pivotal that the film got this epic showdown correct – which, through large part, I believe they did. Both The Cap and Ironman received decent enough screen time to explore their differing ideologies in a way that allows audiences to understand their journeys and ultimately, pick a side (I was #TeamCap all the way, but found myself on the minority side when speaking with others).

Seeing the Avengers assemble is always a thing of glory with Marvel, as Civil War brings our favourite old faces (Black Widow, Hawkeye, Falcon, War Machine, Scarlet Witch, Vision and Ant-Man) into the fold, as well as introducing a few newcomers (Potential spoilers to follow). Black Panther (played by Chadwick Boseman) and Spiderman (Tom Holland) are excellent additions to the team: Boseman nails his performance as T’Challa/Black Panther, whose introduction is more than just a cameo, whereas Holland is memorable as the new movie incarnation of Spiderman. As stated before, every superhero on Civil War’s roster has their moment to shine, and despite the huge ensemble, each character is utilized perfectly to make the film work.

The Captain America movies have always boasted political undertones, which, to an average viewer, can come across as boring or incomprehensible. In Civil War, the idea of bureaucracy is the driving force to many events that occur throughout the film. Steve Rogers/Captain America’s refusal to sign the accords is brought on by the return of his old friend, Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) following a massive crime that was apparently caused by the mysterious Winter Soldier. The Cap believes there is a shred of good left in Barnes that The Powers That Be can’t see, fueling his own desire to protect his friend and uphold his own beliefs. This is where the internal conflict between the Avengers commences, as the group becomes largely divided in response to the Cap’s stance.

In the end, Captain America: Civil War is another glitzy, action heavy superhero flick that you’d come to expect with Marvel but what makes this film stand out from the rest is that instead of the film following the same formula where a villain comes and goes before the end credits, Civil War’s main conflict is between our team of heroes we have grown to love which leaves us with a cliffhanger question going into the next Marvel film: Can the Avengers be Civil with each other again, or will there always be war?

The Man of Steel is back for his highly anticipated sequel… Only this time, he faces off against one of cinema’s most popular and well known legends: The Batman.

It was clear how fierce this cinematic battle between two of DC comic’s superhero greats was going to be when the question was thrown out to the audience at last night’s exclusive premiere at Auckland’s IMAX cinema: Are you team Superman or team Batman? Both teams garnered significant cheers and the crowd was lined with cosplayers representing their favoured frontman. So the hype levels heading into the film was set pretty high already – igniting a secondary battle between director Zack Snyder and a legion of eager moviegoers and fans, thirsting for more superhero action after what seems like a lifetime of waiting and a tonne of marketing. So, did Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice exceed everyone’s expectations?

Hmmmmmm.

Henry Cavill is in top shape as Clark Kent (aka Superman) and has a worthy opponent in veteran actor Ben Affleck, as a gritty, noir Bruce Wayne / Batman. Amy Adams as Clark Kent’s career driven and loyal love interest Lois Lane caters to strong, feminist ideologies, although she still requires the odd rescuing in times of distress. Jesse Eisenberg surprised me as the villainous, tech-conglomerate Lex Luthor, turning the bumbling billionaire into a well-rounded and deserving foe against our two heroes.

A faithful adaptation to his original comic counter-part? Probably not, but I will let it slide. Meanwhile, Comic book fan favourite, and newcomer to the DC cinematic universe, Wonder Woman – played by Gal Gadot – pops in to make an appearance, red leotard, shield and lasso at the ready.

As Batman wallows in anger over his pursuit for justice against a superhero creating super destruction, Superman solemnly glides above the skies, facing his own conflict of…. Well, I’m not quite sure. Between saving Lois from bad guys, fighting more bad guys, working at the Daily Planet, visiting his mother and flying aimlessly, Clark Kent is basically living his life as your average superhero down the road.

Dawn of Justice serves more as an introductory piece for Batman into the world of Superman. Although Ben Affleck shines in filling in the epic role as the Dark Knight of Gotham, the need to show a flashback to his childhood tragedy could have been shortened to, maybe, a single line of dialogue, as the audience is well aware of what happened to Bruce Wayne’s parents (we don’t need to be reminded of it in every modern Batman adaptation). Concurrently, because of the focus on Wayne’s story, Clark Kent/Superman’s character development makes slow progress and is further overshadowed by his involvement in a subplot focused on a Supreme Court intervention.

The subplot doesn’t warrant any further mention as it is incinerated mid-film and the final endgame doesn’t have any connection to it whatsoever.

At first glance, Batman VS Superman seems good on paper, but anyone who isn’t familiar with the source material knows these icons of greatness are incredibly mismatched. There’s no sense of logic pitting Gotham’s greatest caped vigilante against an indestructible alien who is as fast as a bullet and as strong as an ox – yet, it happens and you can’t help but question how it happens.

However, what does works between these two champions is the dynamic they share when they are in the same scene.

On one side, you have a God from the cosmos, adapting to the idea of being Earth’s savior. On the other hand, you have a caped crusader who considers superhumans (such as himself) as “criminals”. A party thrown by Lex Luthor brings Kent and Wayne together de-costumed, where Cavill and Affleck’s working chemistry is at its best. When both men, unaware of the other’s superhero nature, trade passive aggressive remarks towards eachother, the audience is reminded of this antagonism that continously lingers throughout every frame – keeping the rivalry active and the film grounded, making the match-up far greater.

So which team are you on? Team Batman or Team Superman? Personally, since the the announcement of the film’s title in May 2014, I always felt Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice would be a cheap CGI-driven gimmick. It wasn’t and it looks great in IMAX.

But, due to what could have potentially been a strong storyline falling into a batcave of incohesiveness, there were moments that could have been better scripted. Nonetheless whichever side YOU are on, this is an epic film that you need to see this year and decide for yourself who the real winner is.

The man responsible for award winners Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours has helmed yet another cinematic autobiography based on the life of one of the most influential business entrepreneurs this generation has seen: Steve Jobs. Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs not only follows the progressive career of Jobs’ and the legacy he left behind (Apple electronics) but also places a main focus on his relationship with several key people in his life.

The whole film is structured around three dramatic acts, set between the years of 1984 to 1998. Each act takes place immediately prior to the launch of a key electronic product designed by Jobs. The structure is pivotal to the storytelling, as it spotlights Jobs’ triumphant rise in his career in an isolated time and space behind the wings of these three products launches. In saying that though, the film isn’t about these launch events. The launch events serve more as a backdrop to the main story.

The storyline heavily relies on the supporting characters in the film, where character interactions, dialogue and performances play a major role in the overall narrative, as well as the understanding of Steve Jobs as a person.

Michael Fassbender plays the titular character and he excels in bringing the extremely manic and hard-hearted Jobs to screen. In the forefront, Jobs is noted for being a one-note businessman, somewhat unlikable, rarely showing differing emotions on screen and is focused on the success of his computing brand. Kate Winslett plays the female lead as a highly-strung but highly loyal marketing executive, Joanna Hoffman. Fassbender and Winslet did phenomenal in playing the dynamic of ‘work husband and wife’ with each other, where Winslet would often steal the show with her soft, pained but flappable portrayal of Job’s confidante.

Another relationship central to Job’s story is the correlations he shared with an ex-girlfriend and his eldest daughter. Katherine Waterson plays the entitled, vaguely feminist ex girlfriend, Chrisann Brennan, and her existence in Jobs’ life is mainly a means to connect Jobs with Lisa, his neglected daughter. Arguably, the character of Lisa is this film’s true hero, as not only does she fight for her father’s attention but the audience watches Lisa grow throughout the film’s timeline.

One thing that worked against the film’s setting was that it didn’t allow scenes to provide the emotional depth needed at times.

For example, scenes involving Fassbenner and Waterston’s characters could have been explored in a more appropriate setting than in the back stages of the Apple Macintosh unveiling ceremony. Chrisann’s frustrations at Jobs’ refusal to acknowledge his daughter only served to make the character of Chrisann look intrusive and villainess whilst reinforcing the idea that Jobs was a ruthless, cold-hearted businessman.

Funny man Seth Rogan simmers down as Jobs’ former business partner Steve Wozniack but this role is relegated to mainly serve as a potential foil to Jobs’ personal story and the character’s arc remains the same throughout the entire film. Jeff Daniels as Apple CEO John Sculley has an interesting conflict with the main character but Sculley is quickly thrown out before the final act. As much as the supporting characters play a big role in the film’s narrative development, they are largely used to serve as embellishments for the character of Jobs.

Ultimately, this is a film about Steve Jobs – not the legacy he left, or the enterprise he created, but the person he was.

Needless to say, Steve Jobs is a dramatic observational piece into the life of a deeply flawed but highly successful business entrepreneur that’s carried by the performances of its cast. Although much content from Jobs’ family and upbringing is largely unexplored, the film does cater to enthusiasts interested in dramatic and emotional performances.

For those of you that remember the 2007-2008 financial crisis but know nothing about it, then Adam McKay’s Comedy-Drama The Big Short is the film for you… Or not.

The world in which The Big Short is set in is quite a complex and complicated one that requires the average moviegoer to pay close attention to detail. Failure to do that could mean the difference between a thought provoking film experience (with plenty of laughs) from an arduous, tiresome stretch to the bailout.

The Big Short is based on a novel that is based on true events and details the origins of the financial collapse that threatened the US economy in 2007. It follows several key players who created a credit default swap with national banks by betting against the US housing economy – predicting its downfall.

The most important aspect of the film is understanding the world of finance. The film moves hard and fast, and with a running time of 130 minutes, it is packed with a lot of information to take in. McKay attempts to make the subject matter palpable for the audience by means of characters breaking the fourth wall to explain financial terminology and onscreen graphics with definitions of words were used to assist the audiences at times.

In one scene, Gosling’s character displayed a game of Jenga as a means of describing the fragility of the US mortgage bonds market. However, despite all these efforts, the process can still prove quite bewildering to grasp and often leaves viewers feeling overwhelmed.

The Big Short boasts a cast with several well-known, established actors. We are introduced to our first big name in the form of Michael Burry, a socially inept and slightly odd hedge fund manager, played by Christian Bale. Bale plays the role of the abnormal entrepreneur extremely well – to the point where it is hard for the audience to want to take the film’s journey with him. The character has poor social skills, wears the same outfit to the office everyday and spends most of his scenes listening to deafening heavy metal music.

The other characters are interesting and the actors that play them all shine in their roles, yet none of them are necessarily likeable. No stranger to comedy, Steve Carrell as Mark Baum takes it to a different level as a straight laced, cynical New York Investor whereas Ryan Gosling, known for being a romantic lead, brings the hilarity as the ambitious and slightly arrogant trader Jared Vennet.

Brad Pitt as retired banker Ben Rickert, shows he is a banker with a moral conscience, but his part is too minor for the audience to really invest in his story.

In saying that, it is the performances of the actors that really carry this movie to its pre-hyped heights. You could argue that any one of them excels. But without them, what kind of film would we be left with? Would it have the same impact? My answer would be yes and no. Personally, the film would spark possibly less interest in viewers if the cast weren’t comprised of the A-List.

However, I do admit that I was relatively surprised to find myself continuing to watch the film even though I knew I was never going to be a Wall Street broker.

Something about The Big Short keeps you hooked until the closing seconds. With confusing tidbits about the most frustrating business in the world, to characters that provoked feelings of cringe instead of admiration, The Big Short falls way short in terms of delivering a cohesive storyline for people, such as myself, to absorb but the fast pace of the narrative and the comedic timings of the stellar cast does offer some enjoyment along the way.
