This weekend the PlayStation VR has brought me some of the greatest gaming experiences I have ever had, but unfortunately it has also brought me one of the worst in Here They Lie.  If a game is really bad, you can just close it, remove the disc and pine over the loss of your money.  But in VR, as I discovered, it can make you feel nauseous and that feeling can sit with you an hour afterwards.

Starting up Here They Lie I really thought I was in for something special.  Having seen the trailers knowing it is based off David’s Ladder which inspired other titles such as Silent Hill, it seemed like the perfect title for virtual reality.  Enter a strangely manipulated world as it uses your surroundings to terrify you to your core.  Even being the total wuss I am I just had to experience the perfect fit suspenseful horror and Virtual Reality should be and starting it I felt it was a good fit.

Looking around the old street in the Main Menu it felt good and not long after you find yourself in a train making your way down the carriages. The design looked great but I did not get to the end of the train before the first time I had to take my headset off.  Less than 10 minutes in and I felt very nauseous to the point where I had to stop playing and not just a little iffy but genuinely like I was not long from actually being sick.

The game is played from the first person perspective. You can move your character around with one stick and the other does a weird strafe which fades out and back in.  This movement made me feel really off as well which is so unfortunate as the scenery looks so good.

After the first failed attempt I tried three more times, sometimes not even getting five minutes more in before I had to place the headset down and say no more.  I got two other people to try the game too and they did not get as far as I did before having to take it off, meaning it is not just me it did not sit with well, it has just been badly deigned for VR.  I hoped I could just play it out of VR to at least try to enjoy the story but no, it is a VR only title.

PlayStation VR has launched with a wide range of titles from great to exceptional, but Here They Lie is not one of them.  Until they patch it to stop making people nauseous I would not recommend this to anyone and if or when they do, if the pieces I have managed to sit through are any indication, then it should be really tense and great but right now it is going to make people nauseous for the wrong reasons.
