Directed by Anupam Sharma and starring Brett Lee and Tannishtha Chatterjee, UNIndian follows Meera, a single mother and Australian of Indian origin. In spite of pressure from her family to find an Indian match, Meera just wants to live her life and let things happen however they want to happen. Saying this, it’s not long before Meera meets Will, an Australian man who’s as ‘UNIndian’ as you could get.

UNIndian addresses the clichés and stereotypes of both Indian and western culture in a charming and comedic fashion whilst not overpowering it to a ‘cheesy’ level. It comes as a breath of fresh air when a film doesn’t take itself too seriously and focus on the everyday lives of people.

The main focus of UNIndian is moulded around the idea of a cross-cultured relationship, somewhat similar to the likes of Bend It Like Beckham but with an adult relationship instead of a teenage.

Set in Sydney Australia, it was somewhat relatable to see a film not too far from home and with the same westernised culture. A lot of people aren’t able to travel to the exotic locations where films are usually set. There was a relaxing and comfortable familiarly that came with watching UNIndian that I wish those in the Southern hemisphere got to experience more often in film.

Brett Lee, famous Aussie cricketer, stars in his first official acting role in UNIndian and manages to hold his part nicely. Tannishtha Chatterjee as Meera also gives an acceptable performance and I’m curious as to what other roles she’s been a part of. Saying this, the real stars of the film were its supporting and minor characters. Meera’s parents dominated the comedic aspect of the film through their traditionalist Indian values and morals, much to Meera’s dismay. On the other side, Will’s friends were a lot of fun to watch and had instant chemistry from the get go.

UNIndian invites you into the vibrant and lively world of a modern day cross-cultured relationship. An entertaining romantic comedy.
