There just aren’t enough police procedurals out there.
That’s obviously a joke as there are more procedurals than there are stars in the night sky. For the most part a lot of them are pretty generic and it’s the characters you fall in love with. Ones with a hook though can really succeed, and annoyingly, as is the case for Unforgettable, sometimes a great one with a hook just doesn’t hit.
At least this one didn’t leave us with a cliffhanger… Oh yea, it did.
Unforgettable follows Carrie Wells. Carrie was a detective who has the ability to remember everything. Anything she has seen she can recall as needed. This is obviously a really handy skill as a detective. Having left the force, her ex partner pulls her back in for a case he can’t solve that happens to involve someone in her apartment complex.
Next minute she is knee deep helping solve crimes. This alone is a solid premise for a decent police procedural, but the kicker is she has something she can’t remember. The day her sister was killed. This is the through line for the series that makes it that little bit more interesting and engaging.
One of the things that really hurts the show is it never really peaks to any massive highs, it all stays at a kind of solid consistent level. While this consistency is nice, and it is a solid level to remain at, it just needs some top notch highs each season that could elevate the show a lot more. The acting is all, just like the quality of the show, solid. Again nothing that blows it out of the water. Again nothing wrong with it, and the show is very enjoyable, it’s just a little bit forgettable.
This DVD collection comes with all 4 series, and the show does well to stay consistent that long, and each series has its own special features that are really enjoyable. As a collection it’s damn good value with the full 61 episodes here that are very bingeable. The challenge is the core premise of the person with a photographic memory helping out cops, it’s the same premise as Psych. Psych though is a fantastic comedy that is incredibly witty and enjoyable. So between the two, the silly psych is a much better watch than the more serious Unforgettable.
It is ironic that without the highs.
Unforgettable can be a bit forgettable. Despite this it’s still a great box set of a solid show that holds its quality up for a heck of a lot of episodes. It’s a really chill watch that you can chip away at and enjoy without having to engage your brain too much. It’s just unfortunate that it left on an annoying cliffhanger that I really would have liked to have seen resolved with a 1 hour special or something. Either way, I did really enjoy rewatching this DVD series, and it’s the perfect show for turning your brain off after a hard day of work.
