Humans are no longer at the top of the food chain.

They are hunted by creatures that are blind but extremely sensitive to sound.

So much so that the only way to survive is to remain quiet.

A Quiet Place is a unique film, so unique that there has never been anything like it before.

With very little dialogue or cast the film paces along through it’s narrative told by actions of a small family that have managed to survive up to this point in small town America.

The creatures tend to live out of site, in the woods, and with their lightning fast reactions will kill at the first sound they hear with precise accuracy.

The family is headed by a understandably protective father, Lee Abbott (John Krasinski) and his late term pregnant wife Evelyn Abbott (Emily Blunt), who are husband and wife in real life, and three children.

The youngest child knows that there is dangers to making any noise, but the discovery of a light and sound toy, that his deaf, older sister gives him, brings out what it means to be a kid…

And this sets the premise for the entire film.

A Quiet Place does not go in to it’s backstory that much, but for the more observant of film goers, they will pick up how these creatures came to be. And while the creatures obviously play a major part in the film, you rarely see them until near the end. This isn’t a shock film where monsters are going to blast out on to the screen, this is a film about survival.

A Quiet Place is a film played out in mostly, silence. So much so, that in the cinema and at the premier, it was an awkward silence with all attendees too afraid to make a sound (so don’t buy snacks that come in crinkly packets).

With a few jump scare, the film also relies on the soundtrack to set up the anticipation and there’s a heap of anticipation and for those that get spooked easily, frights and tension.

For the gamers, I’d liken A Quiet Place to PlayStation’s The Last of Us, the similarities are striking and Lee Abbott even looks like Joel.

A clever mix of SciFi and horror, makes this film a thriller you must see.

Cleverly silent and for some, super scary.
