Somehow it has already been 15 years since Soul Eater came out.
Feel old yet? You should. The good news is you can now pick the whole series up in a new Bluray collection. The better news is it doesn’t just hold up, it’s still awesome now!
For anyone that hasn’t watched this great series, Soul Eater is one of a kind. It is set in a world where there are bad people that want to bring an evil demon to life. To combat this there are people who are trained to stop this using special weapons with much more than meets the eye. These weapons are actually people who can transform, so there are pairings of these weapons and their meisters who wield them in weapon form.
Sound pretty bonkers? There’s so much more.
The series follows some of the young meisters who attend a school called Death Weapon Meister Academy.
This school trains the meisters and their weapons to fight evil. And who runs the school? Death does. Death is of course a bit of a quirky dude with a strange appearance, who wants to keep the balance in the world. To do this the young meisters need to capture the souls of evil people in their weapons, and only when they have enough are they ready to fight the good fight. Oh and they need to catch a witch in there, so that’s a touch harder.
The premise is weird and unique, and really sets up for a great series which kicks off with Maka and her weapon Soul as they capture their 99th soul. All they have to do is capture their witch and Soul is going to become a legendary Death Scythe. They get their ass kicked by a witch, and with a follow up fight manage to capture her. Soul chows down to find out… she wasn’t a witch. She was a magical cat.
Unfortunately, that resets the soul count and so they are back to square one. We are then introduced to our other main characters as they all have to navigate the school as they try to make their weapons death scythes. It balances the silliness and comedy, with some serious and dark themes.
The most striking thing that makes the series so distinct is the art.
If you have played The World Ends With You games, then the character designs and proportions are really similar to that game. If you haven’t well just check out some trailers and you will see what is so distinct about the characters. Things like inverting buildings during battles really adds a unique flavour. Then there is the weird Sun and Moon that pops up in the sky which is unique and creepy as hell. I absolutely love watching this series just for the 51 episodes of the animation itself. But it helps that the show is awesome too.
If you haven’t seen Soul Eater yet, then this is an excellent way to correct that. All 51 episodes collected here look amazing on Bluray and fortunately the show doesn’t just still hold up, but is still amazing in 2024.
Soul Eater rules, and your life is better with the show in it.
